Position: Director Business Development

Description:

Solazyme is a leader in the application of synthetic biology to marine micro-organisms to produce renewable fuels, lubricants, industrial chemicals and health and wellness products. Solazyme’s mission is to develop and commercialize environmentally sustainable, scalable, and economically attractive bio-alternatives to petroleum and plant-based fuels and chemicals. The company is located in the heart of the biotechnology corridor in South San Francisco California.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of experience in energy, specialty chemicals including ag-chem, or biotech with at least 2 years in a business development role and a proven track record successful contract negotiation.
  • Good understanding of organic chemistry and chemical applications is preferred.
  • B.S. in a scientific discipline and advanced degree and/or MBA strongly preferred
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills evidenced through relationship management, networking and team building.
  • Genuine willingness and ability to participate in and contribute to additional activities including: Government relations, product/process development, and marketing.
  • Must be able to manage and prioritize multiple initiatives and assist the company in implementing a business plan that calls for substantial revenues within 9 to 18 months.

The individual in this role will contribute to strategic positioning, business model development, and growth of the company. Therefore, he/she must be able to position Solazyme’s core technologies and products as a targeted value proposition to a diverse collection of potential partners in a variety of markets. Resulting in the development and commercialization of new and existing renewable sustainable products and technologies that will differentiate the company from competitors and leverage Solazyme’s core biotechnology platform.

Essential Functions:

  • Business Development: Identifies, initiates, negotiates and manages relationships with strategic and potential partners whose objectives and product/service offerings complement Solazyme’s short and long-term vision.
  • Corporate Strategy: Conducts qualitative and quantitative research in support of corporate strategies and business opportunities. Prepares conclusions, makes recommendations and develops forecasts by identifying, analyzing and interpreting available information.
  • Market Analysis: Analyzes and defines the market for products and product candidates, conducts competitive analysis and estimates potential market share by product and market segments.
  • Marketing and business planning: Develops marketing plans, business plans, sales strategies, and action plans for target markets. Able to conduct product costing and production modeling studies
  • New Product Development: Manages key aspects of the new product launch process through to sales. Effective collaboration, coordination of key activities and critical path schedules. Leads development of Supply Agreement Contracts with key suppliers. Manages the Subcontract Process and other resources required to support supply.
